Choosing Paint and Paint Colors For Your Home
Choosing the right paint and paint colors for your home is not as difficult as one might think. Here are some tips and tricks.
Choosing paint for your interior
There are many brands out there on the market today. Any home improvement store will have at least 2 or 3 brands that you have heard of. Here at Amazing Home Decorating, we have worked with probably all brands of paint out there and have tried different finishes.
From company experience, Benjamin Moore is one of the best paint brands, alongside Sherwin Williams and Behr. These paints lay down well on the surface, have good drying time and the end result is incredible. If there is a color you love and you found it in another brand, these paint brands will match it and custom mix it for you.
A paint finish you will end up with is also an important factor when choosing your paint. There are such finishes as flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and gloss. Flat finish has no gloss and it slowly graduates so that gloss finish is very shiny. Pick the right finish for your project. For example, flat matte or eggshell finishes are great for such rooms as bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms. Eggshell, satin or semi-gloss finishes are great for kitchens and bathrooms. Semi-gloss is also ideal for trims: it is durable and washable.
There are oil paints and latex paints. We prefer latex, which is water based paints. They produce the least fumes, drying time is fantastic and the clean-up is easy. If you have walls or furniture that has been painted with oil-based paint and you want to repaint it using water based paint, prime it first with oil-based primer.
For an environmentally savvy consumer there are such paints as organic. Organic paint is almost odorless and has no VOC. All major brands carry organic paints. It’s a great choice for kids' rooms.
Choosing paint color for the room
Choosing a paint color is mostly a personal preference. It might help to choose the color based on the furniture or room accessories you already have in it. Also, consider your personal style or the decorating style of the room. You can read about different decorating styles here.
If your room has no furnishings in it yet, start looking at some furniture and decorating accessories. It’s easier to choose a paint color when you know what furniture you will have. You can match the paint color to the decorating style, to the color of the print on the couch or even to a lamp.
When you settle on a color, but can't decide on the exact shade, get samples. Most home improvement stores carry small containers of paint samples. Purchase a few samples and either paint them directly on the wall or on a large poster board. You can put the poster board in different places in the room to see if this is a good color for the room's surroundings.
Don't get discouraged if in the end the color you chose and painted with is not what you envisioned. You can always repaint. If you need help deciding on the choice of color or help in painting, please contact us through information in the upper right corner of the website.
